Part 2: Functional Behaviour Assessment and Data Collection


Functional Behaviour Assessment (FBA) is a core component of Positive Behaviour Support and provides a structured process for understanding why behaviours occur. Rather than focusing solely on the behaviour itself, FBA explores the factors that influence behaviour, including environmental conditions, communication needs, skill deficits, sensory considerations, health factors, and quality-of-life issues.


In this module, participants will learn how to gather, organise, and analyse information from a range of sources to develop evidence-informed hypotheses about the function of behaviour. Participants will explore observation methods, interviews, record reviews, ABC data collection, behaviour tracking systems, and other assessment tools commonly used within Positive Behaviour Support practice.


This module also examines the importance of objective data collection, identifying patterns and trends, and using assessment findings to inform behaviour support planning and decision-making.
